6 + 7 Feb: Springs Junction, Reefton, Greymouth
A hot sun burned away the morning fog, leaving a blistering summer day. A fellow camper had warned us that this was going to be a rare day for the South Island, reaching up to 90°F.
We skipped the Big River-Waiuta Track for fear of another day like Maungatapu: brutally hot, impossible terrain, enough time in the bush to run out of water. Instead, we spent a long day making as much progress as we could, with the goal of getting to Greymouth a day earlier than planned.
The hot roads were tempered by cooling winds – headwinds, but a relief all the same.
We made it to a campsite along the beach in Greymouth, relieved to have extra time for laundry and relaxing in the small seaside town.
