10 Feb: Porter’s Pass, Springfield
Plenty of miles rolling through the mountains today. From Arthur’s Pass Village, we remained in the highlands and surrounded by stunning peaks. The landscape shifted from western forests, vibrant green and screaming with cicadas, to dry, forbidding scenery as we neared Porter’s Pass.
We descended from the alpine country into the plains. Reaching Springfield, we found there was camping, but no groceries; Darfield, further down the road, had groceries, but no camping. And so we rode the 14 miles along flat farmlands to Darfield for a few days’ supplies, then 14 miles back to Springfield to set up camp.
